Reflections on the Case by the U.S. Justice Department against Steven Kurtz and Robert Ferrell

Many people have asked us why the Justice Department is pursuing this case.

Meaning, when the Buffalo Health Department affirmed that there was nothing dangerous in the Kurtz home and that Hope Kurtz died of natural causes, when the FBI saw that the possession of scientific equipment and materials in Kurtz's home studio was completely consistent with his practice as an artist and that his practice has a long, public and institutionally validated record, then, why didn't they drop the case? When it became clear even through the Grand Jury investigation that this was not a case of bioterrorism, why did they pursue it? Couldn't they see that this is art?

For a New Cultural Critique

The events of the century's turn, from Seattle to New York, have shown that a sweeping critique of capitalist globalization is possible, and urgently necessary—before the level of violence in the world dramatically increases. The beginnings of such a critique exist, with the renewal of "unorthodox" economics.1 But now one can look further, toward a critique of contemporary capitalist culture.

To be effective, a cultural critique must show the links between the major articulations of power and the more-or-less trivial aesthetics of everyday life. It must reveal the systematicity of social relations and their compelling character for everyone involved, even while it points to the specific discourses, images and emotional  [ ... ]

C'est la logique du capitalisme que d'établir localement un marché sûr et stable, qui n'augmente pas trop les coûts sociaux - par exemple pour le maintien de l'ordre – afin d'éviter l'apparition d'une sorte de "séparatisme". To create a common element above the three dimensions of urban life (work, housing, public and gathering spaces), the terms "traffic" and "communication" imposed themselves in the urbanistic generalities about movement. With the explosion of electronics, realising the science-fiction of yesterday, we are now in scenarios of the virtual city, the online city, the city of bits, the cybertown and other metaphors of disembodiment. But the real function of cities is still to organise the proper cohabitation of centres, non-centres and outlying areas, like an accumulation of topographic powers (factories and offices, flats and houses, stadiums, theatres, squares, streets and public buildings).

Nostalgia for the future: The darker the night, the brighter the stars

Once upon a time, people believed in the future. When I was growing up in England in the 1970s, one of the most popular programmes on TV was called 'Tomorrow's World'. Every week scientists would talk about how new and wonderful inventions would make our life better. Sociologists talked of an impending leisure society, where our biggest problem would be what to do with all the spare time created by increasing automation.

Space was central to this sense of future possibility. In eight short years the human species went from Yuri Gagarin's first tentative journey beyond earth's atmosphere to landing on the moon in 1969. However much this achievement might have been framed in the politics of the Cold War it  [ ... ]

CARTOGRAPHIES DE LA DISSEMINATION

Il semble symptomatique que le concept de "locative media" soit devenu le dernier truc à la mode dans la communauté des arts électroniques. Chaque festival a sa section « locative », spéculant sur les (fantastiques) possibilités artistiques et sociales qu’offrent les technologies mobiles intégrant les données de positionnement. Pour être « hype » dans la « scène », le principe est d’être à la page en matière de derniers jouets technologiques.
Bien sûr, la critique peut se manifester. Elle le fait. Il y a beaucoup de discours vides sur les concepts de « mutations », de « devenir hybride », etc. Les jeux basés sur la localisation par exemple, ont été largement critiqués par des activistes orthodoxes ou des critiques du « media art »,  [ ... ]

Good evening. The title of this presentation, as you could notice is: INSULATION/ISOLATION PROCEEDINGS, proceedings which are connected to the project that me and my colleagues have set up at this years documenta and will also have the form of proceedings, with some technical terms included that I will try to explain as well as I could in if there will be any inconsistencies. Ill try to skip the INSULTATION part, but if anybody will be offended, can register with me after the lecture.

The Locative Commons : Situating Location-Based Media in Urban Public Space

At last month's Transmediale festival in Berlin [1], the Utrecht-based arts collective Social Fiction received the festival's prestigious Software award for their .walk (dot-walk) project, that combines computer code and "psychogeographic" streetwalking. During the walk, participants carry out an algorithmic series of instructions derived from computer code, that "calculates" the city as a giant "periapatetic computer" [2].
It may seem amazing that such a simple idea can even be considered software, but the concept behind it is the clever part, based, as it is, on a metaphor for how order emerges from chaos, borrowed from the ant colony, which generates maps through the brute force, random  [ ... ]

The topic of our panel discussion this afternoon is about " local media, maps and psychogeography ". I think it’s necessarry to come back first to a brief history of psychogeography, Unitary Urbanism and the Situationnist International at the turn of the sixties. The end of the fifties and the beginning of the sixties were a period of acceleration in urbanism of European and world cities. Dans l’époque de la domination informationnelle ou l’espace de la communication est un champ de bataille, ces équipements sont également au service de l’observation des mouvements et communications des hommes à des fins stratégiques militaires offensives ou défensives. Des équipements de transmissions et interceptions de signaux qui sont donc encore largement sous contrôle de la défense d’état.

En 1993, les Lettons découvrent l'existence d'une station top secrète, datant de l'ère soviétique. Cachées au fin fond de la forêt, au nord de Ventspils, ville côtière de la Baltique, se dressaient trois antennes utilisées par le KGB pour espionner les communications satellites entre l'Europe du Nord et les Etats-Unis pendant la guerre froide. Quand les Russes se retirent, ils démontent la plus petite et vandalisent les deux autres.
